Zach Braff and Donald Faison are rewatching their iconic and hilarious sitcom Scrubs, sharing their thoughts about each episode, their memories from the set, and any fun trivia they can think of on their hit podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends. But these are real friends, after all, and they often get sidetracked by other topics, with hilarious results. On this episode, for example, they discuss in depth the inconsistent amounts of sand in “My Five Stages,” but give equal attention to Steve Guttenberg’s career, with particular focus on his run of Police Academy movies. But the fans love these departures, as demonstrated by their guest, Taylor, who asks them which Star Wars origin stories they’d like to see most and which gaming system first got them into video games. Don’t worry – she also gets them to sing a little bit of “Guy Love” too.
Zach’s standards for season five have been so high that he says this episode doesn’t quite cut it for him. Chief among his complaints are the sand gags: “We’ve mentioned before that the most unrealistic thing that happens in nine years of Scrubs is that the Janitor builds a livable sand castle in the parking lot,” he says. Donald agrees, especially when all the sand buries Lawyer Ted in his office, but doesn’t kill him. “Ted would have been buried alive like he was Tutankhamen,” Donald says firmly. But mainly, the amount of sand doesn’t add up. They have enough for a small beach, but the Janitor can build a livable house with it? It spills all through Ted’s office, but “at the end of the episode we’re back on the roof with the sand again! Did we lug the sand back up?” Zach asks. “That’s a lot of work – in real life and the show!”
Then their guest Taylor comes on and they have a lot of fun with her questions about Star Wars and gaming systems. Ideas are bandied about for movies about Darth Vader in his prime, the program manager who had to figure out where to get the steel for the Death Star, and Salacious Crumb’s life before Jabba the Hutt; then they get nostalgic over their first favorite video games, paying tribute to Final Fantasy X, Nintendo’s GameCube (and the James Bond game that “changed everything”), ColecoVision, Spiro, and Starfox before brainstorming ideas for Taylor’s new Scrubs tattoo. Hear their entire hilarious conversation on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
