Apple’s Foldable iPhone Has Left-Handed Users Asking Questions
Apple introduced its foldable iPhone Duo last week, and the design is already getting mixed reactions from left-handed users.
The phone will not arrive in stores until next month. Early reviews suggest it is easy to unfold and hold with your right hand. Some users say holding it with your left hand feels less comfortable.
Apple says the closed Duo is compact and comfortable to hold. The company also moved important controls to the side to make them easier to reach.
That may work better for right-handed users.
Some left-handed people say the placement of the Touch ID button, outer display and cameras makes the phone awkward to use in their dominant hand.
A left-handed software setting could help with some functions. However, it would not change the physical location of the buttons or cameras. One commenter suggested Apple would need to make a mirrored version of the phone to offer the same experience for both hands.
Roughly one in 10 people is left-handed, so the concern could affect plenty of potential customers.
Still, not every left-handed user sees a problem. Some already hold their phones in their right hand. Others say they are used to adjusting to products designed with right-handed people in mind.
Apple’s promotional videos also show people holding the Duo in their left hands. That suggests the company tested more than one way of using it.
The phone may also feel unfamiliar simply because it folds. Most people will need time to adjust, regardless of which hand they use.
The better test will come after customers have used the phone for a few weeks.
