Should Iowa end Daylight Saving Time?

A half-dozen Iowa lawmakers are working on bipartisan legislation to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, a ritual of adjusting clocks by one hour each spring and fall with the goal of gaining an extra hour of evening sunlight during the summer months.

Senate File 168 would establish Central Standard Time as standard time in Iowa throughout the year. Similar legislation is being prepared in the Iowa House by five lawmakers.

Legislators said they are introducing the proposals at the urging of constituents who don't like changing their clocks and who believe the reasons for initially adopting Daylight Saving Time to save fuel during World War I no longer exist.

Current proponents of Daylight Saving Time include retailers who like more sunlight for customers to shop during evening hours and sports teams that play evening games.

A Rasmussen Report in March 2013 found that only 37 percent of Americans believe that Daylight Saving Time is worth the hassle while 45 percent said it wasn't worth it and 19 percent were not sure.
