A father and son were killed in a fire Sunday in rural Preemption.
The Mercer County Sheriff's office said a call was received at 9:37 p.m. about a fire at the home at 1531 U.S. 67.
The victims were Matthew Phelps, 31, of 1531 U.S. 67, and his son, Kash Phelps, 4, Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson said. The victims were transported to UnityPoint Health-Trinity Rock Island, where they were pronounced dead.
Autopsies are expected to take place Tuesday, Mr. Gustafson said.
Firefighters from Sherrard handled the fire with the assistance of firefighters from Matherville, Viola, Blackhawk, Orion and Coyne Center, the sheriff's office said.
