Davenport Schools DENIED

For those of you, like me, who have kids in the Davenport School District...

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWQC) – The School Budget Review Committee has denied a request by the Davenport Community School District to spend $175 more per student using district reserve funds. It’s an issue that the school district has complained about for years, but spending from reserves that way would violate state law.On Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, Davenport Comm. School Dist. Superintendent Art Tate went to the committee to make his case. Tate told the panel that without using the reserve money, the district would be forced to make deep cuts in the future.

The public school state aid formula was created 40 years ago and the author of the law has said that lawmakers did the best they could back then, but some districts came out ahead of others.

Despite his pleas, the committee’s decision upholds the law.

KWQC’s Mark Stevens is in Des Moines covering the meeting. Look for the district’s reaction on KWQC-TV6 news.
