The story goes like this: Roman Numerals started being used by the NFL for Super Bowl V, thanks to former Kansas City Chiefs owner, Lamar Hunt . He wanted to avoid any confusion that might happen with the championship game happening in the year following the season that just ended – such as the 2018 season ending with a Super Bowl that’s played in 2019.
