Ah...Christmas is over. If you spent the weekend watching bowl games and taking down the tree, here's what you need to know to dispose of it...

IN IOWA CITY

  • If you have a "live" tree and it's not flocked, you can put it out at the curb for pickup. Do NOT place it in a plastic bag and make sure all decorations, ornaments, and wires are completely removed. The trees will be composted at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center.
  • If you have an artificial tree, you can arrange for them to be picked up and disposed of for an additional fee. Call 319-356-5151 to arrange pick up. For more information, visit www.icgov.org/reduce.

IN CEDAR RAPIDS

  • If you have a "live" tree and it's not flocked, remove all of the ornaments, decorations, and wires from the tree. Do NOT place it in a plastic bag. Cut the tree into 3-foot sections. The tree can be placed at the curb on your collection day. You may also put the tree into the YARDY cart for collection, but make sure the lid can close.
  • If you have an artificial tree or a flocked tree, it is considered a garbage item. If you can set out your artificial tree in 3-foot sections, a $1.50 sticker is required for each section. If you cannot separate your artificial tree into sections, call the Solid Waste & Recycling Office at (319) 286-5897 to set up a special pick-up of your tree. The tree will be collected with the Bulky Item Collection Program. The cost of collection will be $5.00 and added to your next municipal utility bill.
